A Trip to the Zoo

Posted: 24th June 2011 by frank in Abstracts, Creativity, Photos

It’s been a quiet month for postings – my apologies… However..lots has been going on at this end (all good stuff) including the incubation of several ideas I’ll be sharing more about on the site soon… So watch this space 🙂

Last weekend, we went for a nice day out to Twycross Zoo (Its the world no. 1 place for primates you know !! So if you like monkeys, chimps, apes and other animals too, then its a great place to visit)

And of course as you might imagine, the camera was with me and plenty of animal pictures were taken…

However, I also started looking around with my “abstracts” eye (after seeing some very nice abstract art drinks coasters in the gift shop!) and took these:

(if you click on each one, you’ll see a bigger version):

I had a lot of fun taking them and also editing them afterwards… (another enjoyable part of the creative process)

And… just in case you thought I avoided the residents of the zoo…. here’s one sending his greetings to you 🙂

Why not try the postcode challenge at some point over the next week (5 photos, 30 mins, in your postcode area) BUT this time looking for abstract patterns that appeal to you… Post them up on the flickr site and lets see them !!

I’ve just been reviewing the photos added to the flickr group in the last few weeks and I’m loving the range of pictures people are posting. And moreover, it’s fascinating reading the accompanying descriptions and comments. It’s so interesting to see the kinds of things people are drawn to photograph. Of course the postcode location has something to do with it but not everything…

Take this picture from Soozi HL – It’s a shot of her local school.

Soozi says “I took the shot because I liked the straight white lines and the Cornish flag poking through the trees”. I think it’s brilliant how she stopped to think what might be interesting about this familiar (to her) building rather than just walk on by. Personally, I also love the contrast between the deep blue and white colours.

Here’s something completely different from Helen Clare:

Helen captioned this shot as “Who knows what’s around the corner”. She was thinking more of a theme to the shot… what it brought to mind… a different reason for taking the picture and equally compelling. Any thoughts, by the way, on what’s around the corner, please let us know … in words or photos!

There are plenty of other examples in the flickr group pool, so do take a look and keep them coming !!

Photographing the “ordinary”

Posted: 17th April 2011 by frank in Uncategorized

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them” – Elliott Erwitt

I came across this quote today and it said a lot to me about one of the reasons why I love taking pictures and also one of the main reasons why I set up the Postcode Photo Challenge…

Take this very ordinary looking seat for example… I’ve walked past it many times before (it’s near a car park I use in my local town). What’s so interesting about a seat?? Well maybe closeup, from a low angle and with a little bit of saturation it starts to look more interesting (well it did to me anyway *grin*)

If you have a look on the Postcode flickr group page http://www.flickr.com/groups/postcodephotos/ you’ll see some other examples from contributors. It’s really interesting to have a look at their comments to see what it was that caught their eye.

Why not have a try yourself… more information on both the homepage here and the flickr page.. These days, we all seem to be rushing around so much… It’s good to sometimes take a slow walk, pause, look around and see what you might not have “seen” before (and capture it for posterity with your camera)……

I’d love to hear your comments… just click in the little speech bubble at the top right hand side of this post…

Have a great week…

Best Wishes, Frank

The creative genius of children

Posted: 11th April 2011 by frank in Uncategorized

It’s true what they say about learning from our children.

Certainly for this project my 8 year old Son has inspired me with his creativity… We went out a few weeks ago to take a few pictures for the challenge.. I’ve uploaded some of his today (go to the flickr group and you’ll see)… When you see the photos at first you might think… hmm.. well OK… but have a look at the descriptions where I’ve tried to relay where he was coming from… I LOVE his thinking…  I could write a lot on children’s wonderful natural confidence to “try things out” like this… but perhaps thats for another day….

P.S Here are the direct links to his pictures… to save you looking through the group pool 🙂

Getting Nearer

Posted: 27th March 2011 by frank in Camera, Community, Creativity, Photos, Postcode

Final preparations are taking place…… launching very soon…

In the meantime… some things to think about :

  • Do you have a camera – big or small, simple or complex?
  • Do you use it very often? Or maybe just on holidays / special events?
  • Would you like to have some fun with it and try something a bit different?
  • How do you feel or would you feel if someone says “WOW” when they see one of your photos?
  • Would you like to join a community of like-minded people?

More on the way… Come back soon ….

The Post Code Photo Project ….
